Mount Kilimanjaro - Kenya Or Tanzania

What would you answer if asked where do the Kilimanjaro stands?

Obviously the 1st answer is the Tanzania: as all those visit to Tanzania trek on it as one of the prime adventurous activity.

Kilimanjaro: the highest mountain in Africa: one of the seven summits in the world that has its top 5888 meters above sea level: is a colossal mountain and is not confined within the territory of Tanzania. It expanses to the border of Kenya: the neighboring country of Tanzania.  Hence we can say it is located on the territory between Tanzania and Kenya.

Kilimanjaro Climbing is getting popular day by day and the strategy shows that every year more than 30,000 people try to reach at its snow capped top from Tanzanian side. Can it be climbed from Kenya?

Yes it can be. The Rongai route is the only trail to approach Mt Kilimanjaro from the North, on the Kenyan side of the mountain. This route is considered more scenic than the Marangu route and easier than the Machame route and has a high summit success rate. Many of the trekkers who want easy and scenic trekking prefer this route to reach at the summit. Climb through this route can be completed within 6 routes.

As like other routes this route would also take you through various vegetation zones.  You would pass by the villages and coffee plantations, attractive forest that shelters a variety of wildlife, through the exotic heather-zone flowers and plants and then through the moorland and so on.  The outstanding photographic opportunity on your way to the summit would captivate your soul and the mind as well.

Just find how both Kenya and Tanzania are related to Mt. Kilimanjaro:

Location:

Mount Kilimanjaro actually lies only 20 km from the Kenyan border and this is why you would get some of the best views of Kilimanjaro from the Kenyan side of the border. Although Kenya already has a much higher tourism rate than its neighbouring country yet Kenya’s tourism board and its tour companies often market Kilimanjaro as a Kenyan attraction.

Flights:

Many people opt to fly to Nairobi rather than Tanzania to get to Kilimanjaro as the former seems to be a cheap flight destination. It’s also possible to take a short flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport from Nairobi.

Kilimanjaro Kenya Route:

No route except the Rongai Route starts form the Kenyan border but this route begins only a few kilometres from the Kenyan border at Rongai Gate and then enters into Tanzanian border. The unspoiled wilderness and alpine desert make this route a highly rated option for the climbers.

The Kilimanjaro Region:

The mountain sits within Kilimanjaro National Park, a large conservation area adjoining the Kenyan border and the three major towns: Moshi, Arusha and Marangu are the towns where mostly the Kilimanjaro Climbing expeditions are initiated. The vast majority of trekking tours depart from these settlements and these also act as trekking hubs with full of accommodation for tourists, and house many trekking companies.

Reaching Kilimanjaro from Kenya:

The simplest and fastest way is to fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport from Nairobi. From the airport; public buses, shuttle services, taxis and airport transfer services are available to get you to the relevant town. The cheaper option is to take a bus from Nairobi travelling to the Kilimanjaro region:  Arusha and Moshi.

What To Choose – Kenya Or Tanzania.

No doubt that both the countries have excellent game viewing capability to combine with the mountaineering. Yet Tanzania is a better option because:
  • You can directly land in Kilimanjaro airport and take a road trip to any of the towns considered to be the hubs for Kilimanjaro climbing.
  • You don’t need to do a separate visa for covering the Tanzanian zone while trekking.
  • You can easily get all things required for the trekking in any of the town.
May it be from Tanzania or Kenya: Kilimanjaro Climbing is one of the most exciting experiences that both the countries provide but Tanzania tops the list in arranging and getting the number of visitors for Kilimanjaro Climbing?
